San Domenico Palace Hotel

This 15th-century monastery was converted into a hotel in 1866. But don't expect monastic frugality—the decadent decor comprises marble, wooden floors and wrought iron tables, gothic candelabras and huge fireplaces. The old monks' "cells" have been converted into rooms—great for authenticity, but some are a bit tight. If you prefer a bit more space and modern luxury, then opt for the new grand hotel wing, complete with great sea views—you'll soon see why Taormina was a favorite retreat of literati and poets. Get involved in the history at the museum, or simply gazing around you at the relics of forgotten times. When you're ready to come back to the present, there are four restaurants to choose from, try the elegant Principe Cerami with its locally sourced ingredients such as olive oil from the foothills of Mount Etna, local veal and suckling pig. If you're feeling reflective, the Aanticco Refettoro Restaurant is located in the old refectories of the monastery and serves up the fresh-as-it-gets catch of the day. Soothe over-indulged bodies in the beauty corner, with massages and marine inspried cosmetics. If retail therapy's more your thing, you'll have to travel to Catania, as there are only one or two boutiques dotted around. One of two of the only places to stay in Taormina and my favorite. 30 miles from Fontanarossa Airport in Catania.
