Restaurant File: San Diego's Top Alfresco Dining and Hip Lounges
Sunny San Diego's Best for Gourmet Mexican, Sushi & Nouveau Californian
Lately, the sprawling, Southern Californian metropolis of San Diego has raised its culinary profile, shedding its image as a bit of a wasteland. A new crop of sleek gourmet restaurants, European style cafes and trendy, late-night spots are on the scene, joining some beloved classics to put the city on the foodie map.
Whisknladle
La Jolla

Go to this new La Jolla hotspot for its chic atmosphere and great al fresco dining patio, as well as for its dedication to simple—and simply delicious—fresh and seasonal cuisine. Family-style dining is encouraged, all part of the owner and chef's philosophy that food is best enjoyed when shared. Impressively, the kitchen staff produces many ingredients and products in-house, from baking bread and smoking and curing meat to turning out a range of cheese, ice cream and sorbet. "Whisknaladle offers patrons a down to earth experience in what is an otherwise extravagant scene," says one of the private concierges at theOne, a new, member's-only concierge service focused on San Diego and Baja, Mexico, and helmed by plugged-in concierges from some of the city's top hotels. "Whisknladle's passion for gastronomy can be seen with their homemade specialties all made from ingredients that come from local farms that share Whisknladle's vision of quality and preservation. When not manning the kitchen, owner Arturo provides patrons with endless recommendations," he says. Another fan is local private Chef Tina Washburn, founder of Urban Cuisine catering. "The restaurant is cooking up quite a scene with its late night dining, unheard-of happy hour specials, and a sprawling patio that packs in the locals," she says. "Visualize crowded Manhattan bar meets relaxed La Jolla sidewalk dining. Chef/Partner Ryan carefully prepares each dish with compassion and sensibility using house techniques to cure, age, smoke, meddle, infuse and pickle to then brilliantly execute fine sharable dishes like Chorizo & Date Fritters with Tomato Sauce. And equally as pleasing are their signature cocktails like their Champagne & Lavender Martini!"

George's at the Cove
La Jolla

Wow ... George's new rooftop open-air terrace and bar with views of the beach is a must! And the main dining room—sleek and spare with floor to cieling picture windows—is another destination for superb views and elegant dining on gourmet contemporary Californian food. "Enjoying dinner at George's California Modern, located in the stunning village of La Jolla, is an absolute delight," says
Kelli Djulus, a wardrobe stylist, image consultant and personal shopper in San Diego. "The amazing azure view, delicious haute cuisine, impeccable service, extensive wine list and the overall sophisticated ambience makes this a truly enjoyable experience. Plus, all of the produce is delivered from world renowned Chino Farm, located here in Rancho Santa Fe.

Cafe Chloe
East Village

For a casual lunch or brunch with some Parisian flair, head to this new arrival out by Petco Park. "I love spending a lazy Saturday morning at the adorable Cafe Chloe, says stylish local Kelli Djulus, who lived in France for several years. "The coffee is from Illy, the menu is delish and the vibe reminds me of one of my favorite, quaint Parisian bistros." And like they do in France, you can bring your dog and park yourself at a sidewalk table. "Cafe Chloe is located in downtown San Diego's artistic, up-and-coming East Village neighborhood, a neighborhood that has seen a mass improvement with the addition of the new ballpark, and is quickly becoming a conglomerate of talented young chefs," says our concierge contributor at theOne. "The cafe offers a Parisian meets San Francisco boutique-style bistro experience, with a French-inspired menu and a superb wine and beer selection. The staff at are experts in food and wine pairings so feel free to ask them to help you navigate the menu. Our current obsession is the Leal Carnival Mertitage decantered and enjoyed on the patio—a great spot to enjoy your wine while enjoying some great people watching. Don't forget to check out their version of afternoon tea, called “Urban Tea," which includes and assortment of sandwiches, house made cakes, cookies and sweets, paired with a pot of gourmet tea or glass of prosecco. This pet-friendly restaurant offers water and treats to passing canine friends as well."

Sushi Ota
Mission Bay/Pacific Beach

"Hands down the best place for sushi in San Diego!," says Kelli Djulus. "All of my Japanese friends swear by this traditional restaurant and please, do not let its humble location fool you." She's not kidding! Once you've found this tiny and obscure spot, tucked away behind a stripmall, you'll be rewarded with melt-in-your-mouth freshly caught and expertly prepared seafood. Go for whatever is the special catch of the day.

Quarter Kitchen at the Ivy Hotel
Gaslamp Quarter

If you're looking for a satsifying dinner combined with a trendy, nightlife experience, the current place to go is the Quarter Kitchen at the new Ivy Hotel, says the private concierge from theOne. "The menu is inspired by Chef Damon Gordon's modern vision of American Cuisine, with such dishes as Kobe Beef Hot Dog and Caviar Tacos, and the restaurant is infused with energy by an open kitchen that takes center stage," he says. "For a more intimate dining experience, inquire about their Wine Cellar, which seats eight and has more than 3,200 vintages. After dinner, be sure to head over to one of Ivy's two seductive nightclubs—Ultra Lounge or Envy—or get bottle service beside one of the fireplaces on the Eden rooftop, while DJs play by poolside cabanas and mingle with San Diego's most elite crowd."

The Crown Room at the Hotel del Coronado
Coronado

For weekend brunch, a classic place to go is the Crown Room at the Hotel del Coronado. "It's a requisite stop on any visit to San Diego, but be sure to make reservations if you wish to dine there for brunch," says our concierge tipster from theOne. "The Crown Room's historic elegant decor with rib-vaulted pine ceilings is exceeded in elegance only by the splendor one gets from feasting on the cuisine. Sunday brunch is a feast well suited for royalty, as was the case in 1920 when it hosted a decadent meal for England's Prince of Wales. They serve all the traditional breakfast dishes, but don't be surprised to find an eclectic array of ethnic specialties too. Make sure to walk off the heavy meal with a nice stroll through the historic hotel, which is a landmark loved by visitors and locals alike, and complemented by one of California's most beautiful beaches."

The Restaurant at the Pearl Hotel
Point Loma

"Not to be missed is the ultra-cool new kid on the block, Restaurant at the Pearl, a new boutique hotel in Point Loma," says Tina Washburn, a local private chef and caterer. "Reminiscent of a Mid-Century MOD Pasadena home, the Pearl hotel is relaxed and swank with a unique and crafty menu. A smashingly adorable young chef, Trey Hartinger, serves up Eclectic-Californian fare during such special nights as Three-Fixe Mondays (three courses for $25), Taco-Rita Tuesdays (two gourmet tacos and a margarita for $10), and Wednesdays' 'Dive-In-Theatre," when guests wine and dine around—or take a dip in—the large outdoor pool, while watching a choice flick on the Pearl's ginormous outdoor movie screen." How fun! NB: The bamboo tree-bedecked bar and lounge on the outdoor pool terrace is also a happening place for drinks, with cocktails served until midnight. Book ahead if you want a private dinner for six to eight people in one of the tented, poolside cabanas.

Confidential Restaurant + Loft
Gaslamp Quarter

For a festive night out with a big groups of friends, you'll find plenty of space and good food at Confidential Restaurant + Loft, located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter. "Confidential offers patrons an upbeat, social dining experience, followed by post-dinner entertainment," says theOne's concierge. "We recommend it fordining with a large group because of its tapas- inspired menu created by Chef Rich Sweeney, who's currently on Bravo's Top Chef Season 5, and because it allows your party to sample and share a variety of flavorful dishes. You should try to book ahead for Confidential's loft, located in the second floor, where you can have a private, intimate dinner while still enjoying the people watching below. Make sure to stay after dinner when the DJ's increase the BPM's and volume to begin the transition to a late-night lounge hotspot. Wednesday nights are the most popular for nightlife crowds, and you can frequently spot local sports stars in the crowd."

Blanca
Solana Beach

"Located in San Diego's North County city of Solana Beach, Blanca offers diners a true California Coastal Cuisine dining experience," says a private concierge from theOne. "Set in a chic, contemporary atmosphere atypical for this quiet SoCal neighborhood, Blanca is well worth the 30-minute drive from downtown. A white motif embellishes gray and charcoal shadows in the main dining room. We recommend the Peking duck garnished with kumquat and mint chocolate compote, but if that does not satiate your appetite, don't be afraid to ask for opinions from the wait staff as they are consistent in kindness, charisma and culinary expertise."

Filippi’s Pizza Grotto, Italian Cuisine
Little Italy

This is a local favorite for family-friendly Italian feasts, where the kids will be catered to. "Filippi's Pizza Grotto is a landmark in San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood," says theOne's concierge. "Filippi's continues to be one of San Diego's most popular restaurants to enjoy a hearty Italian meal in a family oriented ambiance. It offers old fashioned customer service and great traditional Italian specialties, but don't expect to find a Maitre D' to guide you through the wine list. Reservations are not taken and you can expect long lines during peak hours. If you have energetic children in tow, ask a friend to wait in line while you window shop in one of San Diego's most colorful neighborhoods. Filippi's pizza is an undeniable San Diego staple."

Tartine
Coronado

If you live on Coronado island, or are staying in one the resorts there, or if you're there to check out some of it's great shops, make time for a light breakfast of fresh pastries and coffee or a lunch break at Tartine, overlooking the San Diego Bay. "This delightful, European style cafe is the perfect spot for a casual, quick yet delicious breakfast, cafe au lait or an afternoon treat," says Kelli Djulus. "Sit inside and linger or enjoy a table outside and people watch." Don't miss their pastries made by expert chefs, some of whom trained at Johnson and Wales in the U.S. and L'Ecole Le Cordon Blue in Paris. The dinner menu is tempting too.

Il Fornaio
Coronado

Al fresco, waterfont dining is one of the many highlights of life in sunny San Diego, and Coronado Island is one of the best destinations for open-air meals, where even some of the franchised restaurants are standouts. "While Il Fornaio is a chain restaurant with locations in five states, my husband and I always enjoy dinner at the location in Coronado," says Kelli Djulus, a chic personal stylist who used to live in and eat well in France, and her husband is French, so for her to recommend this spot is really saying something! "We enjoy sitting outdoors on the patio, near the fireplace, while gazing over the San Diego bay at our beautiful downtown skyline."

Bertrand at Mister A’s, French Cuisine
Downtown

"Bertrand at Mister A's is a San Diego classic for dinner with a view," says our concierge friend at theOne. "Located on the 12th floor of an uptown building, Mr. A's, as the locals call it, offers diners spectacular views of the downtown skyline, bay, airport, Point Loma, Coronado and Balboa Park. While the views at Mr. A's are amazing, the steak and seafood might temporarily distract you from your surroundings. The old dinner jacket rules no longer apply, but definitely come dressed to impress. Forget the foie gras and enjoy Mr. A's take on the American classic, macaroni and cheese, with comté cheese, émincé of black truffles and white truffle oil. After dinner, step outside for a drink on Mr. A's wraparound balcony to fully take in the beauty of the view."

Candelas Coronado, Mexican Restaurant
Coronado

Given its location right above the Mexican border, San Diego is, of course, a hotbed of authentic Mexican restaurants, and a top one is Candelas, which has two locations, one downtown and another on Coronado island. "Candelas was a true innovator eight years ago when it first opened its doors, bringing gourmet Mexican cuisine with hints of French influences to the downtown Marina District, and now it takes its culinary vision to another level at its new location in Coronado," says the concierge at theOne. "Do not expect to find Americanized Mexican dishes such as chips, salsa, and guacamole, nor will you find a sombrero hanging from the wall. Candelas Coronado offers a chic Mexican dining experience and stunning views of the downtown skyline from across the Bay. A great way to reach Candelas Coronado is by taking the ferry from Broadway Pier, which departs every hour on the hour, returns on the half hour and is only $6 a trip. It leaves you just footsteps away from the restaurant."

Rei Do Gado Brazilian Steakhouse
Gaslamp Quarter

A carnivore's delight in the lively Gaslamp Quarter, this authentic Brazilian churrascurio is a favorite for people with big appetites and a yen for relaxed, Latin-tinged, festive ambiance. The decor is nothing to speak of, but the all-you-can-eat salad bar and buffet and all that meat on sticks is, and it's an ideal spot for dining out in a large group. "Meat lovers will fall head over heels for Rei Do Gado," says Kelli Djulus. "Expect to wait for a table unless you've make a reservation in advance, and be sure to not wear your skinny jeans the day you go! This restaurant is delicious, loud and full of life. Be sure to order a caipirinha, the national drink of Brazil. The ones they serve are delicious—and strong! Taxi anyone? ..."

Influx Coffee & Tea
Golden Hill

"Located in San Diego's hipster Golden Hill Neighborhood, Influx is by far one of San Diego's best kept secrets," says our savvy expert at theOne. "In addition to great coffee and tea, they also have an in-house bakery that makes delicious baked goods that help bring their tasty pastries and sandwiches to life, typically in less than a five minute timeline. The minimalist decor and consistently good tunes streaming through the speakers make it a unique cafe reminiscent of those in Seattle, and it will keep you coming back for great coffee and an good vibes."

Hillcrest

Body-conscious San Diegans who want to eat healthy to maintain that bikini bod or surfing six pack, but who also want to savor their food, head to Spread Nouveau Comfort Food in San Diego's eclectic, gay-friendly neighborhood of Hillcrest. "It's the type of restaurant that makes even the most carnivorous of humans consider an alternative lifestyle," says a concierge at theOne. "Spread features a unique vegetarian and vegan menu with a convivial ambiance and is a hotspot for those seeking healthier dining options. The restaurant prides itself on serving only locally grown, organic ingredients, and each dish is served one at a time to encourage sharing."

El Bizcocho at Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Resort & Spa
Rancho Bernardo

Pure romance, and ideal for special night out. El Bizcocho in the Rancho Bernardo Inn has racked up awards for both its food and its elegant urban refinement-meets-hacienda decor. In keeping with the restaurant's fresh approach to French cuisine, the kitchen puts a premium on organic ingredients and day boat fish. Regulars' favorites, like lobster bisque with Armagnac, remain fixed on the menu, but the chefs are always inventive, too. Settle into an ultra-plush banquette at one of the window tables, and the friendly staff will ensure your evening runs smoothly. Wine is a highlight, and you can choose from their list of 1,500 vintages, or ask the knowledgeable sommelier to find the perfect match for your dishes. Even though jackets and ties are no longer the rule, remember to dress smartly.

Marrakesh
La Jolla
Craving cous cous or Moroccan mixed grill? Or a sexy atmosphere perfect for a date? Moroccan is always a good bet, and the place to go in San Diego is the aptly named Marrakesh, which has been around for years and has three locations in Southern California. "This restaurant in the village of La Jolla, serves delicious Moroccan food, complete with belly dancers, low tables and comfy cushions," says Kelli Djulus. "It reminds of that date scene from the Harrison Ford remake of the film Sabrina!"

Dobson's
Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter

Two words: Power Lunch. This longtime favorite, a narrow space in a former pub in the landmark Spreckels building, has a unique story. Open since 1984, it's run by one America's few professional bullfighters, Paul Dobson, a.k.a. Pablo, who turned restaurateur after hanging up his cape. The very hands-on and affable former toreador regularly welcomes guests to his restaurant, a haunt of San Diego's legal, political and media circles, as well as the pre-theater dinner crowd. Like the machismo of a bullfighter, Dobson's has an especially masculine feel, with a straightforward pub/steakhouse style decor trimmed with lots of wood paneling and old-timey stained glass panels. You'll need to book at least a week in advance for a Friday lunch table when the joint really jumps; you can also jockey for a seat at the bar on the ground floor. For a little more elbow room, request to be seated on the mezzanine level, a bit quieter and best for people-watching. The hearty food is Californian with touches of Italian, French, Spanish and Asian flavors, and Dobson's signature mussel bisque is a hit.

Stingaree Restaurant & Nightclub
Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter

Dining at a nightclub is usually ill-advised, but not so here, so put on your party clothes and come hungry! (And boys should note that no sneakers or ripped denim is allowed). "Stingaree in downtown San Diego is a high-style ultra-club that has somehow mastered the art of dancing and dining all under one roof," says private chef Tina Washburn of this three-year-old, MASSIVE, glitzy, state-of-the-art nightlife and dining complex in a converted warehouse. "Executive Chef Antonio Friscia delivers impeccable cuisine using ingredients from local farms. Enjoy steak frites or Sicilian shrimp and crab cakes while listening to thumping house music, and then sit back and watch the sexy scene roll in. When you're ready to get down, just steps away are several sexy lounges and rooftop bars where the DJ music is turned up and the crowd starts moving." Stingaree features an indoor waterfall, bottle-service (seemingly ubiquitous at clubs these days), and three stories with lots of nooks and cranny booths for group dining and private parties; for the ultimate party venue, book the tricked-out Penthouse, a private lounge which has its own bar and accommodates up to 50 guests, who, if bored with one another, can look out the "voyeuristic" window and check out the action down on the dancefloor, where a diverse crowd of revelers mostly in their 20s and 30s mix and mingle. For cocktails, especially at sunset, head up to the outdoor Rooftop Oasis, another see-and-be-seen-spot with a fire pit, lounge beds, and private cabanas for intimate gatherings. A bit tacky, and certainly not good for the environment, is Stingaree's signature orange Hummer limo, which can be hired for bachelorette or bachelor parties, or any other big night out with friends when you don't want to worry about a designated driver. NB: the restaurant closes at 11 p.m. and the club closes at 2 a.m.

Rama, Thai Restaurant
Gaslamp Quarter

The owners of
Celadon, a stunningly sleek, modern and gorgeous Thai restaurant in Hillcrest have triumphed again with Rama, yet another red-hot Thai eatery, this one in the city's historic Gaslamp Quarter. It's more self-consciously Asian in style than the Euro-chic Celadon, and it's a great spot for a relaxed meal with friends. There's something ethereal about the romantic and atmospheric space, with its light-as-silk transparent drapes, Buddha sculptures, comfy red couches and dramatic floor-to-ceiling stone water wall. Named Best Thai Restaurant by
San Diego Magazine, and attracting a young and hip clientele, Rama takes traditional Thai specialities—spicy rice, soups, salads, seafood, BBQ dishes and lots of curries (the Penang and Masaman versions are favorites)—to a new, contemporary level.
