La Valencia

Set in tropical gardens with ocean views, La Valencia has been the place to stay in La Jolla since it opened in 1926. Just 12 miles north of San Diego Airport, this gorgeous pink-washed palace will have you in instant wind-down mode with 115 guest rooms and suites, each decorated with a breezy southern Californian flair and looking out to the village, gardens or ocean. The new Ocean Villas are my pick, offering a more private and intimate stay. The hotel has three restaurants: Whaling Bar and Grill has a fun seaside pub atmosphere; the Mediterranean Room is great for a chic lunch or Sunday brunch on the patio. For a special dinner, Sky Room offers a California-fresh menu—start with white asparagus veloute with diver scallop, followed by the signature Sky Bouillabaisse—and a 1,000-strong wine list. Laze by the pool, work out in the new gym or golf at a nearby course when you're not shopping or gallery-hopping.
