Ellerman House, An Exclusive South African Mansion
Bantry Bay, Western Cape, South Africa

I loved staying in this extraordinary mansion in 2007, located in one of Cape Town's most exclusive neighborhoods—and have sent many friends since. It has such a Mediterranean look and feel about it you could easily think you're on the French Riviera. Named after the British shipping magnate, Sir John Ellerman, who built the house in the early 20th century as a summer retreat, this stately pile has been painstakingly restored to its former glory and is widely considered one of the best hotels in South Africa; I agree.
Do note, the 13 guest rooms and suites, each decorated in a classic English country house style, vary dramatically, so do ask when reserving for one of their best front rooms. (A few of the rooms I visited had nothing to do with the one I stayed in; while most are spacious and open onto private balconies, rooms 3 and 6 are small and uninspiring design-wise). The property is set on a rise with beautifully landscaped gardens and uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean. Gracious living is a good way to envision it: sumptuous furnishings, a gallery of fine South African art, razor-sharp & friendly service, excellent cuisine, sun-drenched swimming pool on a well-manicured lawn and a decent small gym. A cute feature? The cookie room. A tiny open closet-sized nook with fresh-baked cakes, cookies, and bites under glass domes and in lovely transparent jars. Dangerous! If budget allows, opt for the newer and super-stylish Ellerman Villa, located in the gardens with three master bedrooms, two spa rooms, a state-of-the-art entertainment room, and private butler and chef. We watched a film in their screening room and pretended it was ours. Bantry Bay and Clifton Beach are within walking distance and Cape Town is a 10 minute drive away.
Room rates from $460 (low season), $550 (high season).
