Mama Knows Best

mamaagata.jpgMamma Agata
Ravello, Italy

Tiny restaurant (six tables; booking essential; delicious, super-fresh “home” cooking), where Mama and bi-lingual daughter, Chiara, also offer cookery day-classes. More a demo than hands-on but a tiny group, so you learn (and eat!) a lot.  Walk some of it off in the surrounding scenery; the whole setting is underneath a stunning rocky outcrop, above the sea, where Mamma keeps her vegetable garden, chicken run, and rabbits.

“One of the absolute highlights was a cooking lesson with Mama Agata in Ravello. We showed up at 10, stayed until 3, cooking and eating the whole time. Mama Agata’s daughter Chiara was the host, speaking in English and helping Mama with some of the cooking demonstrations. The food was fantastic - “basic” Italian staples - eggplant parmesan, spaghetti with tomato sauce, chicken with herbs & lemon - all perfectly cooked. Mmmm” (Shawn & Sherrie Adams, Suzanne’s Files fans)

Prep and Eat

Kounge.jpgKounge
Munich, Germany

Kounge (Kueche and Lounge), is run by a chef from Munich. Most of the food is prepared by the chef and the staff but you join them in preparing parts of the dishes and receive cooking classes at the same time. After your work is done you sit down at a large communal table and enjoy the rest of the evening and the food. Funfor all… but needs to be booked by a large enough group.

Datai Cooking Class.jpgThe Datai Hotel
Langkawi, Malyasia

Excite your taste buds and enjoy a morning of cooking with a Thai Master-Chef. The classes can be arranged for private groups or take a private class like my mother (who is a private cooking instructor) did. You’ll learn all the basics of Thai cooking technique and everything you’ve always wanted to know about exotic ingredients like Galangal and Kaffir Lime Leaves. The demonstration and participation classes are conducted in the beautiful “tree house” styled Thai restaurant where you’ll be fanned by sea breezes. “You’ll leave with life- time skills and a smile on your face!” Says expert chef Louise Aaronson.

What’s cookin’ in Puglia?

puglia.jpgFlavours Cooking Courses
Bologna, Lazio, Puglia

Great for singles, couples or a group of friends. Super gift idea for the “oh but what do I buy him/her?” type. The owner, Lorne Blyth, is the real deal, having built this business out of love. When we met, she seemed like the proud owner of a dream come true. Students stay at very nice, authentically charming inns at each location and walk to the cooking school just nearby. If you reside in the UK, flights are included for the one week courses priced between £700-£1500.
