Winvian, a Country Resort & Spa in Connecticut

Morris, Litchfield Hills, Connecticut

Toto, I don't think we're in Connecticut anymore! Once the country estate of Winthrop Smith, a founding partner of Merrill Lynch, and his wife, Vivian, Winvian was converted a few years ago by the Smith family's kids and grandkids into a most unusual resort and spa—part bucolic retreat and part quirky architectural fantasyland. It's perfect for a secluded romantic getaway and—during special kid-friendly weeks—for a family vacation. You can even bring along your dog if you book one of the three pet-friendly cottages.

Although it occupies 113-acres in patrician Litchfield County, Winvian is decidedly not your typical New England resort. Yes, there's the white clapboard main house, built in 1775, full of cozy sitting rooms and game parlors with stone fireplaces—but its gourmet dining room is helmed by a protégé of chefs Alain Ducasse and Daniel Boulud. And guests stay in one of 18 newly-built deluxe cottages, each with an individual Connecticut theme whimsically designed by a team of imaginative architects. Ever covet your friend's tree-house? Well, at Winvian you can sleep in a real one—albeit one with fireplaces, Wi-Fi, heated floors, tricked-out bathrooms and a king-size bed with Italian linens. Especially great are the cottages that incorporate the rustic setting into the decor, such as "Charter Oak," built around a living Oak tree! Aviation buffs will get a kick out of "Helicopter," a hangar-like suite with an authentic Coast Guard copter plunked down in the center; it functions as a living room, complete with a bar and flat-screen TV. But for all the wondrous interiors at Winvian—not to mention a fantastic spa—a stay there is all about exploring the woodlands and the adjacent nature preserve. Hop on the complimentary bikes and get lost, or ask the concierge to arrange fly-fishing, canoeing, or horseback riding excursions off-site. Don't miss shopping in the charming village of Litchfield! NB: Due to the small number of rooms at the resort, reservations and advance-deposits are a must, and the cancellation policy is very strict.

Room rates from $1,450 per night, double occupancy, inclusive of meals and beverages (exclusive of wines and a %23 tax and service charge). About a two-hour drive from New York or Boston.
