| Description:
History is everywhere in patrician Newport, so the contemporary look inside this recently renovated historic hotel is a refreshing alternative to the more Victorian looking hotels in town. I also like it because it’s intimate—with just 33 rooms, most of them being suites—and has a great indoor lap pool and gym (it was once used as a YMCA, afterall!)
Vanderbilt, of course, is an important local name—the family that erected the legendary Breakers mansion—and this structure was built 1909 by Alfred G. Vanderbilt as the Newport Men’s Social Club. Now a hotel, it was given a massive overhaul a few years ago, updating all the guest rooms with white walls, chic, Mid-Century Modern style furnishings (think Jonathan Adler meets Pottery Barn), and the latest tech amenities, including DVD players, flat-screen TVs, and Wi-Fi. Most suites have kitchenettes, and the hotel has a decent restaurant with a conservatory ceiling and garden terrace, especially nice for breakfast, but you’re right in the heart of the old downtown, close to cafes, seafood restaurants and charming resort shops. Tip: if you reserve in advance, you can dine or have cocktails on the Vanderbilt’s private rooftop deck, with lovely views. This is a great base for exploring the old port and the city’s fabulous mansions. Rooms from $285. |
