Description:
There’s not much in the way of full-service luxury hotels on the northern part of Isle of Wight, but The George Hotel is a charming little inn right on the pier overlooking the Solent in the historic port of Yarmouth. Originally the townhouse of the island’s governor back in the 1600s, the Grade-II listed building certainly has lots of character, yet it’s 17 rooms are perfectly comfortable—although not particularly stylish—decorated with nautical colors and prints of sailboats. (Try to book one of the two rooms with decks overlooking the sea.)

The entrance has flagstone flooring, wood-panelled walls, a grand staircase and a cozy fireplace lounge, all the which will give you the feel of being a guest at someone’s private seaside country home—one that happens to be co-owned by bass musician John Ilsley, a founding member of the rock band Dire Straits. The main draw of this hotel is its fabulous Brasserie restaurant, recently updated with Philippe Starck lighting fixtures and cool banquettes, none of which can compete with the amazing sea views from the picture windows or coveted seating on the outside terrace. Also fabulous is the Mediterranean inspired fare using local seafood and produce, prepared by a young Italian chef who used to work with Rick Stein in Padstow. You’ll be working up a big appetite with long cliffside walks and afternoons sailing on the hotel’s charter boat. 30 miles from Southampton Airport, then a 30-minute ride on the Lymington ferry to Yarmouth.

Rooms from £190.
