| Description:
For some serious relaxation, escape to Salina … the greenest and most laid-back of the Aeolian Islands. Zip around rugged hills on the back of a Vespa, meander along its two extinct conical volcanoes, and head for the beautiful bay of Rinella with its black sands and pink, white and blue houses. Total bliss! The capers here are an absolute must (renowned throughout the south of Italy), and you should also try the fresh fish and sugary malvasia dessert. One of the nicest stretches of coastline is between the villages of Malfa and Santa Marina, overlooking the lighthouse of Faro. Lush pockets of typical Mediterranean vegetation alternate with cliffs of dark volcanic rock that drop abruptly to the sea past vineyards and small white houses. The Capofaro is a lovely place to stay: 18 guest rooms clustered in 7 cottages, built in typical Aeolian style—flat roofs, white-washed walls and columned terraces shaded by delicate woven cane mats known as cannizzi. Each room looks down across the vineyards to the sea, a breathtaking panorama, especially at sunset, when the distant islands of Panarea and Stromboli are bathed in pink. Inspired?
