You can’t get much more authentic than this historic, family-owned Austrian alpine chalet in a former royal staging post and farmhouse. You’ll want to don your lederhosen and practice yodeling! The 39-room hotel is located in the center of Lech, a ski resort frequented by European royals and aristocrats (many of whom stay at Gasthof). While it would not be my choice of hotel to stay in this gorgeous town, it is a classic and lovely—just a bit “old".

Devotees of minimalist, contemporary hotels should look elsewhere—the cozy hotel abounds with hunting trophies and beamed ceilings, and its wood-paneled walls and antique furnishings are adorned with hand-painted Tyrolean motifs. Each guest room is individually decorated in an elegant alpine style, and has large bathrooms trimmed with decorative tiles from Holland, but only some rooms have a fireplace or balcony. After a day of schussing the pistes in winter, or hiking the Edelweiss-covered mountainsides in warmer months, you can recover in the sauna and steam room in the spa, which, rather oddly for a ski hotel, does not have a hot tub. Only one suite has a Jacuzzi, so be sure to book it if a post-piste hot soak is a must. Even if you stay elsewhere in Lech, be sure to stop by Gasthof for an après drink in the library bar, or for an evening at Post-Stuben, its gourmet restaurant with one Michelin star. Don’t miss their renowned apple strudel! 1.5 hours from Innsbruck airport; 2 hours from Zurich airport.
