Penarth, Wales, United Kingdom

Glamour in the Vale of Glamorgan! The sleepy seaside resort town of Penarth in Wales—a holiday hotspot back in Victorian days—now has a chic new hotel that is drawing city couples looking for romantic weekend getaway. Holm House, a lovely Arts & Crafts style mansion built in 1926, has been converted into a chic and cozy 12-room hotel by owner Susan Sessions, a former marketing executive.

The original parquet floors and Mahogany paneling remain, and there's plenty of Art Deco antiques, but she's infused the historic home with Asian flair. You'll find lots of Japanese- and Chinese-inspired designer wallpaper and textiles throughout, as well as botanical skincare line from Thailand used in the jewel box of a spa. The twelve guest rooms have a contemporary feel and are all individually decorated, mostly in soothing shades of white, beige and other neutral colors. (Try to book a room overlooking the sea). It seems Susan has spared no expense when it comes to the details, among them Jo Malone bath products, Bang & Olufsen stereos, and Frette Linens—there's even a chauffeured Volvo available for hire for day trips along the rugged coastline. After sleeping in you can spend the day strolling the rugged coastline, exploring the Victorian architecture of Penarth, stopping for ice cream on the pier, and taking in art and photography exhibits at the Turner House Gallery. During warmer months, you can hop a paddlesteamer boat for daytrips up the coast. Back at Holm House, enjoy cocktails by the fireplace before a meal of seasonal cuisine in the intimate dining room. Approximately 3 hours from London by car; 20 minutes from Cardiff airport; 2 hours by train from London to Cardiff, plus a 15 minute cab ride.
