One of my trusted Insiders, Lisa Cashman, recently spent her honeymoon at Biras Creek Resort, a romantic all-suite retreat on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, and rates it highly. “Our room was intimate and perfect,” she says, “with an exceptionally comfortable bed, an outdoor garden shower, beautiful ocean views from the deck, and no distractions such as a TV. “Breakfast and lunch were fine, a mix of BBQ on the beach and meals in the restaurant, but every night we prepared for sundown as an event. Lenox is a fantastic bartender, always happy to experiment to create the perfect cocktail. The food was creative and tasty, and the desserts excellent, with good quality wines at all price levels.” On the plus side: private Boston Whalers (12ft motorized boats) for exploring the best beaches and coral reefs; great snorkeling and hiking trails to suit all fitness levels; and fabulous views of the bay and ocean from the restaurant and pool. The freshwater pool has plenty of seating, and the beach has several straw huts for shade, each with a flag you can raise to signal the staff for service. Sunset cruises & trips to other islands are also available. On the downside: “The spa was sparse and not particularly luxurious,” says Lisa, “and Virgin Gorda is not the place if you’re looking for nightlife, the entire island shuts down around 11pm.” Biras Creek Resort is probably better suited to more active people … biking around the property, getting in and out of boats, climbing the scenic stone staircase three flights to dinner each night. “But we had a great honeymoon!” says Lisa. Fly to Tortola, then a 45-minute boat ride or shorter helicopter flight to Virgin Gorda. Room rates from $700 a night, packages available. |
