| Description:
Attention aspiring rock stars … West Hollywood’s infamous "Riot Hyatt" has made a comeback, and is now my pick for stylish but moderately priced accommodations in Los Angeles. After an overhaul, the Sunset Strip hotel—notorious in the ’70s for rowdy antics by rock star guests (Rolling Stones, Jim Morrison, Led Zeppelin)—reopened in January 2009 as Andaz, the new hip and affordable luxury brand from Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. It’s well suited for young business or leisure travelers, and anyone who wants to be walking distance from House of Blues, Whiskey-a-Go-Go, the Comedy Store and other nightlife on Sunset. In keeping with the brand’s maxim of "sophistication made simple," the hotel is very minimalist—there’s not even a front desk—and the vibe is casual. Staffers wear uniforms so subtle that they look like regular clothes, making it hard to figure out who’s the point person, but most likely they’ll greet you first, offer you a glass of wine, and check you in while you relax in the lobby lounge (a bit shabby already and has tacky feathered pillows and cheap looking metallic silver ottomans; thankfully the rest of the hotel is better designed). The entire place is done up in silver, black and dark gray tones. Some might find the 257 rooms and suites too bare, but they’re comfortable, with platform beds, Frette linens, LCD TVs, iPod clocks, great working desks and free Wi-Fi. The marble bathrooms are small, but the large Red Flower products helped compensate. The only art comes by way of a white floral applique on one wall, and rock & roll album cover sleeves propped up on the desk (one of which is the guest services guide). Keep an eye out for lyrics from famous guests of yore pasted on walls and windows. If you can, splurge on one of the junior suites for their cool little sitting rooms with picture windows overlooking Sunset; these are the former balconies, now enclosed for extra space. Be sure to admire the Hollywood Hills from the rooftop deck, which has a pool long enough for laps. While there’s plenty of restaurants nearby, it’s worth dining at RH, the hotel’s sleek bar and restaurant with a huge open kitchen, where French-trained chef Sebastien Archambault and team turn out creative small plates featuring seasonal and regional produce. Rooms from $245. |
