Sporty Adventures in Cartagena: Boat Trips, Snorkeling, Kitesurfing & more

Subtitle: Yacht Charters, Island Tours, Scuba Diving & Beaches in Cartagena

In general, the beaches near Cartagena city aren't as nice as the white sand beaches found elsewhere in the Caribbean. It's best to hire a boat for a day (or two!) and head out first thing in the morning to the Rosary Islands for snorkeling, scuba diving and seafood lunches on quiet beaches. But if you prefer to sleep in, you can always spend the afternoon at the beach close to the old city. I've got the scoop on which ones are best; some are quite windy, but that makes them great spots for kitesurfing!

If you want to really explore the islands of Colombia, or even to take a cruise to San Blas in Panama and other spots in the Western Caribbean, book a multiple-day charter on a crewed catamaran or yacht operated by Cartagena Sailing, an outfit run by Georgio, an Italian expat. They generally don't offer day trips, but it doesn't hurt to inquire, as they have a nice fleet of boats with reliable crews. If you're cruising around Cartagena on your own yacht, the place to berth it is Club Nautico Cartagena, the marina where Cartagena Sailing is based; John Halley, the Brtish expat Dockmaster, will take good care of you. Be sure to visit La Pesca restaurant next door for sunset cocktails and gourmet seafood.

Description:
To be honest, most of the beaches close to Cartagena city are not worth writing home about. Beach lovers know it's all about getting up early and taking a boat out to the islands for the day. But not everyone likes to get up early on vacation! If you do want an afternoon at the beach that's NOT a lazy one, head to the beaches north of Cartagena and strap yourself into kitesurfing gear. Although not particularly nice, those beaches are very windy and thus ideal for kitesurfing. NB: instructors don't speak much English, so it's probably not ideal for beginners to try to learn for the first time.

Colombia

Neighborhood:

Geography:

Description:

In terms of stylish beach culture, Cartagena isn't quite St. Tropez or South Beach, but there are some Nikki-beach-esque clubs cropping up. If you're out late salsa dancing, and don't fancy geting up early for a day-long cruise to the islands, then head to one of these two beach clubs later in the day instead. Both featuring chic chaises, sun umbrellas, ambient beats and bar and food service. They're your best bet for beaches within a short taxi-ride from Cartagena city: Playa del Sol Cartagena or Luxury Beach Club Colombia
