A paradise for lovers of nature and modern design, this uber-cool Alpine retreat was designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, who more than ten years ago turned the outdated 1960s spa into a breathtaking minimalist mecca made with enormous slabs of locally quarried quartzite. To call it stunning is not an exaggeration—you can imagine high-fashion photo shoots happening there. Guests bathe in pure thermal waters in the indoor and outdoor pools of varying temperatures. Natural light streams in to the tranquil indoor baths, and the ones outdoors have lovely views of the forest and snow-capped peaks. Treatments include Ayurvedic therapies and facials using the high-tech Swiss skincare line Cellcosmet. Unfortunately, most of the hotel’s 150 rooms, housed in four buildings, don’t quite match the grandeur of its spa—they tend to be small and unfussy—but Zumthor has lent his sleek style to about a third of them, so be sure to book one that he’s refurbished. They are the 39 rooms in the Temporaries building, with black and white furnishings, and the 12 newer and more compact (as in ship cabin compact) but colorful Stucco rooms in the Selva House. All are stocked with a bowl of chocolates made by Vals’ own confectioner. Take a long afternoon hike and then have a leisurely six-course meal in the Red Restaurant, with its crimson carpets and walls and seasonal gourmet menu. Yes, it’s a spa so lighter fare is available, but not everything has to be minimalist. Two-and-a-half-hour drive from Zurich. Room rates from €69. |
