I spent Christmas with my parents at this breathtaking hilltop resort between Lake Moreno and Lake Nahuel Huapi. With dazzling views of three mountains—Lopez, Capilla and Tronador—Llao Llao is one of the best wilderness retreats in Argentine Patagonia. It’s more Canadian lodge than South American hacienda in its design and decor: lots of exposed cypress timber, regional green stone and earthy textures in the furnishings and fabrics. Some of the 168 rooms are on the small side, and are not going to win any design awards, but the hotel also has 32 more spacious suites, a private and intimate cabin (with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, living area, dining room and terrace), and has recently opened the new Moreno Lake Wing with 43 deluxe studio suites. Not that you’ll be spending much time indoors with golf, windsurfing, canoeing, skiing, fishing and wildlife safaris on offer, and a heated pool, spa and health club to relax in after a rigorous day. The scenic panoramas are simply stunning. The service? Excellent for the region’s standards. There’s a well-run Kids’ Club if you’re traveling as a family. The resort has four dining options headlined by Los Cesares, serving very good regional cuisine. Near San Carlos de Bariloche. Believe the hype. Room rates from $255. |
