You won’t find much written about Hotel Taiwana because its owners prefer to maintain its status as one of the most under-the-radar gems on St. Barth’s. The intimate, beachy retreat is a favorite of former St. Barth’s resident Christiane Celle, the stylish founder of the Calypso Christian Celle fashion boutiques. Although she now lives in New York and runs Clic, a new photo gallery and bookshop, she returns often to St. Barth’s, where she’s just opened an outpost of Clic, and where she always checks into the ultra-private Hotel Taiwana. “It’s been a second home to me due in part to my friendship with owner Jean Paul Nemegyei,” says Christiane. “My favorite part of staying there are the simple barbecue meals that he cooks, his specialty being Brazilian lobster. There’s just 12 suites and one guestroom with a ‘Mexico meets modern’ feel. Hotel Taiwana is well known to offer privacy to a celebrity clientele on the shores of the beautiful Flammands beach, and it has a gorgeous water garden with ponds and beautiful water lilies.”
The 13 accomodations are in white-washed villas—the suites have from one- to three-bedrooms—all individually designed and effortlessly chic, scattered amid tropical gardens full of fragrant flowers, and centered around a lovely pool; all have astonishing ocean views and some have private pools and terraces. Service is discreet, friendly and personal. The property recently completed a renovation that greatly expanded the size of their beachfront restaurant, which is open to the public for lunch and dinner. They’ve added a sound system and a DJ station, so it’s sure to become even more of an insider hotspot when they re-open for dinner on December 15. Also new is a fitness center and a massage room for guests. Ten minutes from the airport and 15 minutes from Gustavia. |
