Hotel Savoy
Piazza della Repubblica, Florence, Italy

The sister hotel of the De Russie in Rome, the Savoy is just as grand as its famous sibling—and both are part of the always stylish Rocco Forte Collection. This is one of my favorites in Florence, with a prime spot on Piazza della Repubblica, just steps from the Duomo, Uffizi Gallery and the Ponte Vecchio. Its 88 rooms and 14 suites were very tastefully designed by Olga Polizzi, sister of Sir Rocco Forte. Some of them are on the small side, but all have comfortable beds and rich fabrics in creams and muted tones of gold, blue and green. Most impressive are the marble and mosaic bathrooms. Among the hotel's quirky mix of antique and modern art are prints and paintings of shoes—a subtle hint that the 19th-century building is owned by the Ferragamo family, whose shoe museum is nearby. Little ones will enjoy the special kids' programs available, while workaholic parents will appreciate the top-notch business facilities and fitness center. There's no spa, but Suite Brunelleschi and Suite Signoria each has steam room with chromotherapy and aromatherapy. Savoy's L'Incontro restaurant serves excellent Tuscan cuisine, and also has a kids' menu. During warmer months, locals and tourists alike jockey for tables on its outdoor terrace on the piazza.
