Be sure to book a room with a terrace at this harborfront hotel, which since it opened in 1882 has seen a who’s-who of European royals and Hollywood stars glide through its grand lobby. These days the lustre is slightly faded, but the hotel is still tops in Naples. Views include gardens full of lemon and orange trees, the Bay of Naples, the charming city of Sorrento, the island of Capri, and, of course, Mt. Vesuvius. The 165 Neopolitan-style rooms have high-ceilings, dark parquet wood floors, antique furnishings and thick drapes and fabrics in soft autumnal colors. There’s WiFi and satellite TV, and some of the marble bathrooms have Jacuzzis. Service at the hotel is impeccable, and so is the classic Italian food served at the two restaurants, where gentlemen are required to wear jackets. For a romantic evening, dine during sunset at the open-air rooftop restaurant, Caruso, named for famed tenor and former guest Enrico Caruso. (NB: in Spring 2008, the restaurant will be closed for renovation for a few months). In contrast to the Old World hotel, the spa is decidedly modern and sleek, with Bulgari amenities and a Turkish hammam. Room rates from €169. |
