A chic art hotel owned by the Ferragamos in Florence, Italy

You wouldn't think a shoemaker would make a great hotelier, but these are no ordinary heels … or hotels! The iconic Salvatore Ferragamo brand launched its Lungarno Hotels collection in Florence in 1995, creating luxe boutique boltholes that set a new standard of accommodations in this historic city. Of the four signature hotels, all within easy walking distance of each other, my pick is the funky Gallery Hotel Art, packed with Italian style, creativity and innovation.

The standard rooms aren't particularly large, so opt for one of the junior suites with a terrace, or one of three top floor penthouse suites with views of the surrounding rooftops. The facilities are limited (this is a small and intimate hotel), but the flower-filled Library is a cozy hideaway for a quiet espresso and the Fusion Bar and Shozan Gallery are perfect for cocktails and dinner. The vibe and interior décor is contemporary and cosmopolitan, a blend of cool dark wood, polished timber floors, and gallery-style art and photography … hip, hot and sexy. It's right in the center of town, just minutes from the Ponte Vecchio, Uffizi Gallery, and great shopping and restaurants. You won't even have to change your heels …
