| Description:
It’s arguably the most famous hotel in South America—and a tourist attraction in its own right in Rio de Janeiro—which has played host to royalty, the rich and famous since 1923. I don’t tend to adore large hotels; this is one of my favorites anywhere. Located right on Copacabana Beach at the epicenter of Rio’s round-the-clock action, this magnificent white palace-hotel has 222 rooms and suites, 147 of which are in the main building with another 75 all-suite accommodations in the Tower Wing building. Most of the rooms face the sea, pool or city (avoid the disappointing internal rooms), decorated in a cool and calm palette of white, cream and beige featuring king-size beds with Egyptian cotton sheets, sleek white-tiled bathrooms, TV and CD players and separate sitting areas. For the ultimate weekend-in-Rio escape, opt for the 6th floor Penthouse Suites with personal butler service and a private pool shared between the suites. There’s casual poolside dining in Pergula Restaurant or see Rio’s high society at play in the glam Hotel Cipriani Restaurant (Copacabana Palace is a member of Orient-Express Hotels, hence the Cipriani link). The hotel has an excellent new spa, with treatments by Decleor and Shiseido, just the place to prepare yourself for shimmying with the beautiful bronzed bodies on Copacabana Beach. For more pampering, book one of the hotel’s two Lincoln Town Cars and go on a shopping trip. Believe the hype. 20 miles from Rio International Airport. Room rates from $575. |
