We’re not sure why this little treasure, in the heart of Seville, is classified as a hostel, because it seems more like a personable bed-and-breakfast, or even a boutique hotel. Situated on a triangular street corner between two narrow lanes in the central Santa Cruz district, the restored 19th-century townhouse has original wrought iron gates, balcony railings and window boxes, and an interior courtyard with a skylight roof. The motif of wide, burgundy and white stripes hand-painted on walls throughout the hotel adds a contemporary feel, and homey touches include black-and-white pictures of the owner’s family, some dressed in traditional local attire. Its 16 air-conditioned rooms are small and simple (especially the bathrooms), but all are nicely decorated with terra-cotta tile floors, floral-print fabrics and trompe l’oeil headboards featuring the aforementioned stripes. Some rooms have a tiny balcony; ask for one with a view of the Giralda bell tower (pictured). Callejón del Agua isn’t the place to go for pampering—there’s no spa, or even a restaurant—but its location is ideal for exploring historic Seville, the staff is friendly and helpful—and it’s an outstanding value for the price. Don’t confuse this property with Seville’s similarly named but unrelated hotel, Callejón del Agua, 2, and note that it can only be reached by winding alleys inaccessible to cars, so pack light or you’ll be your lugging your luggage.
