I frequently visit Boston for business, and after a long flight I always look forward to checking into the timeless Boston Harbor Hotel, dominating the downtown waterfront in one of the most historical parts of the city. The main reason I love this hotel is for its truly exceptional service, from doormen and room service staffers to the concierge team—all efficient, friendly and accommodating. The hotel’s 230 newly renovated rooms won’t win any contemporary design awards, but they’re comfortable, spacious and classically elegant, with marble bathrooms, dark wood furnishings, low lighting, large beds and thick draperies and fabrics in tones of deep red, blue and ochre. Modern touches include Bose sound systems, plasma TVs and Ethernet cable Internet access (wireless is available only in the lobby and business center). Watch the boats in the harbor from any of the three restaurants, whether you’re tucking into Daniel Bruce’s seasonal selection at Meritage, or holding your very own Boston Tea Party in the Intrigue Café. Or, in true old-school Bostonian style, you can choose from a selection of fine scotches at the Rowes Wharf Bar. I especially relish the Boston Harbor Hotel on sunny summer days, when professionals from the Financial District jockey for tables at the harborside outdoor restaurant and bar, where live music and dancing is on offer several nights a week. If you’d rather end the day with something a little less toxic—but no less indulgent—head to the simple, no-frills spa and well-equipped gym with lap pool. Steps from the financial district and the sights, this is a good bet for business trippers or those who prefer traditional to topical. On my most recent stay just after the hotel was awarded its 5th star, there was a terrible traffic jam due to a fire in near proximity; the porter knew I had an important meeting and arranged the hotel car take me across town. Earned 10 stars in my book for that proactive, thoughtful service! A class act. Room rates from $260.
