This is the place to stay if you’re visiting Hermanus, a lovely coastal resort town about 75 miles south-east of Cape Town. I stayed here late 2007 and hope to get back soon. Birkenhead House has just 11 elegant and individually styled guest rooms and suites which are both contemporary and classic—stay in room 5 if you want a private plunge pool and marble sunken bath, or room 1 or 2 for spectacular sea views. Thanks to its oceanside setting, perched on cliffs overlooking Walker Bay, it’s ideal for whale-watching (the prime viewing time is August to November). Walk the beach path for some of the most beautiful vistas you can imagine; there are two beaches nearby, so ask the hotel to prepare a picnic and spend a lazy day beachcombing or swimming—but beware the strong currents. Cruises are available to Dyer Island; on the way, you could spot whales, seals, penguins and host of seabirds. Alternatively, there’s hiking, horse-riding, golf and fishing nearby as well as wineries and tastings. Head back to the house for a dip in the pool or some relaxation time in the spa, before enjoying a cocktail on the terrace and dining on the chef’s menu of the day. Tip: don’t book a room in the separate Birkenhead villas unless you are renting the entire building—it’s best suited to families with children. This is one of my favorite properties in the world. Nearby restaurants include Bietang’s Cave (right on the water’s edge- no surprise it serves up amazing fresh seafood), and Restaurant Joubert (elegant yet unassuming, wines are locally sourced and the delicious menu features favorites such as Grilled Sole on Fried Banana and Slow-Roasted Duckling with Naartjie Preserve Sauce).
