This lovely resort is on Sunny Isles Beach, just outside Miami. The vibe is laid-back Mediterranean rather than East Coast buzz. Don’t be disheartened by the eyesore of a 51-story tower—there are only 97 hotel rooms, and the rest of the tower is private condos. The clean and contemporary guest rooms vaguely evoke Art Deco glamour, with furnishings in cream and brown tones, black and white photo prints on the walls, huge flat screen TVs and marble bathrooms with hot tubs. Try to book an oceanfront room with a private terrace, and be warned that while the suites come with large kitchens, a friend noticed that there were no actual cooking pans in hers! Maybe that’s meant to encourage guests to dine at the hotel’s outpost of Il Mulino, a historic Italian restaurant in New York. Acqualina’s primary attraction is its private beach where you can sit for hours beneath a red umbrella. If the pool is your preference, try to reserve one of the tented cabanas. There’s a total of three pools, a fitness center, golf courses and tennis courts. Kids will love the AcquaMarine day camp program with its focus on marine biology. Don’t pass up the chance for a treatment in the truly excellent two-story spa by ESPA. 30 mins from Miami International Airport, 20 mins from Ft. Lauderdale International Airport.
