Come face to jaws with one of the most feared creatures on the planet on an extraordinary expedition to dive with Great White Sharks. From August to November, Shark Diver operates five-day voyages from San Diego to Isla Guadalupe—a volcanic island off the west coast of Mexico’s Baja California—which is home to a large population of great whites and other rare marine life. Group size is limited to 16 on board one of two comfortable long-range dive vessels (the crossing takes 20 hours each way) with three days spent diving in specially designed shark cages. You don’t need to be a certified diver (the cage is suspended just below the waterline and surface air is supplied) allowing you to spend hours viewing and photographing these incredible creatures.

The third oldest polo ground in the United States, this wonderful club has three playing fields in a dramatic setting between the foothills of the Santa Ynes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The weather here is so good training starts in spring and tournaments, like the Bombardier Pacific Coast Open and Wickenden Cup, run through until October. The club welcomes visitors—there’s also a tennis center and swimming pool for those who want a break from the polo—and private or group training instructors will teach you to ride even if you’ve never looked at a pony. And if horses really aren’t your bag, there’s always Golf Cart Polo where you swing a mallet from a chauffeur-driven cart. Sign me up!
