| Description:
Treacy is the king of headwear, beloved by fashionistas the world over. He was championed as a young man by the late Isabella Blow and became her hat designer of choice, responsible for the quirky decorations that always topped off her outfits. If that’s not enough of a fashion pedigree, Treacy, a five-time winner of the British Accessory Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards, has also designed hats for Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel for ten years and has collaborated with designers like Alexander McQueen, Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan on their shows. His hats are more like sculptures than items of clothing and are never an addition to an outfit—they are the outfit. However, despite the astounding creations he has designed for haute couture, his pieces are very wearable, and a favorite of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, who presented Treacy with his OBE in 2007. The Spring/Summer 2008 Ready to Wear Collection has simple offerings, like a straw colored, wide-brimmed hat with large straw bow or delicate and smaller pieces, perhaps trimmed with roses or feather; the shapes are always interesting and original. More daring hat lovers will fall for some of his signature elaborate pieces, like a green hat that sits on the side of the head, spiraling up around bright pink roses and feathers. There are also bags and purses and a collection of men’s hats, although these are not as inspiring as the women’s. One thing’s for sure, whatever you choose, it’ll be a talking point. Available from Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and select fine hat stores.

| Description:
If there’s one place where you’re guaranteed to see a good hat, it’s at a race meeting, and Danya Pinkham’s creations have been seen at all the biggest—Royal Ascot, Newmarket, the Kentucky Derby and Baltimore Peakness. She has a wide selection of hats, made from different materials and is the only milliner in Portland, Oregon. Her felt hats are great for a winter’s day if you’re not quite ready to succumb to the lure of the woolen beanie; caps, cloches and fedoras come in bright colors or adorned with pretty decorations. Come summer, you’ll be looking for something lighter, and Pinkham’s straw designs are just the thing for a stylish sun hat—how about a flapper-style cloche in dark straw with a bright orange ribbon? If you’re looking for more of a show-piece, her cocktail hats are elegant and interesting, and she also has a few couture items that she has designed for fashion shows. I liked the Proud Mary as a statement—it looks almost like a wig, crafted from natural coque feathers.
By appointment Tuesday to Saturday. |

| Description:
Yvette Jelfs is something of an authority on striking head pieces—she not only designs them in her Edinburgh studio but she also judges them in the “Best Dressed” competitions of several major UK horse racing events. She’s the Fashion Correspondent for the BBC coverage of Royal Ascot, so she definitely knows a good hat when she sees one. Her studio is an old, beamed farmhouse in Edinburgh’s Old Town, where she finishes all of her hats by hand, decorating them with sumptuous materials like ostrich feathers, handmade silk flowers and veils. This is also the location for her Millinery School, where students can sign up for a residential week (£1200), or a single day (£150), of learning just what makes a good hat. Pupils are taught the essentials, making separate hat bands, blocking, trimming, veiling and working from patterns. They get to make their creations with the same top-quality materials that Jelf uses in her own designs.

| Description:
Loreta Corsetti is the woman who put Chicago on the millinery map, as co-founder and seven-year president of the city’s Millinery Arts Alliance. But Corsetti wasn’t always all about headgear—in fact, the hats started as decoration around her clothing boutique. Stealing the limelight from the vintage garments, the hats became more and more sought after, until Corsetti turned her full attention to millinery. It’s a good job she did—she proved to be a natural and in 2007 came second place in the prestigious Cappello del Mondo competition, becoming the first US milliner to be exhibited in the Museo del Capello in Italy. In her boudoir-style studio on Chicago’s Gold Coast, she designs pieces with a vintage influence, often using vintage fabrics and trimmings sourced from European antiques markets, and materials such as acorns, fur or horsehair. She can custom design any kind of look, from simple and sweet to 18th-century extravagance. By appointment only.

| Description:
Melbourne’s self-titled “Mad Hatter,” Marilena Romeo has a treasure trove of fab designs, all with a whimsical, fairytale twist. She previously designed for the theatrical stage, and her dramatic flair comes through in all of her bold hat productions. Hats range from delicate wide-brimmed feminine styles, to more structured and abstract creations. Check out the cocktail selection—I love the girly 1920s-style Midnight, with its dark base that sits on the side of the head and the sweeping white feathers, or Era, with a beaded black flower and feathers fastened to a pretty, white base. Romeo decks out everyone from brides, with pretty pearl and silk creations, to race-goers wearing statement pieces—and in 2007 won the Dubai World Cup Millinery Award . Don’t be put off if you want something traditional, as she’s also adept at creating simpler and more subtle hats. The structured Forest hat comes in shades of green and has green flowers on the side, while Veil Bianco is monochrome—a white base covered in black netting and completed with a delicate, feathery floral detail front-center. For bespoke orders, she’ll work with your facial features and your own inspirations to produce an original hat that you’ll keep forever. Contact her for information on stockists or to make an appointment for a custom design.

| Description:
Marie Galvin is to hats what John Coltrane is to jazz: She combines technical know-how with a fanciful imagination to stretch the limits of the form. And the designs couldn’t be more fun! From cloches to feather-decked flapper headpieces to wide-brimmed Edwardian pieces to toppers fit for a rodeo, Marie’s handiwork could turn heads on the streets of Paris or at the Kentucky Derby. It’s couture-inspired but funky and accessible to all, and half the fun is working with Marie to select—or custom create—your perfect match. "Everything is really well-made," says Leah Ikeda, who manages a restaurant in the South End and counts eight of Marie’s pieces in her collection. "My winter hat has all sorts of thick thermal lining, so it’s totally functional, and it’s expressive and ornate and has all sorts of pompoms. Every time I wear it I have to carry her business cards with me in my pocket because people just stop me and ask me about it. They’re very celebratory and wild and distinctive." In addition to the winter warmer, Leah has a few of her feathered headbands that she considers fun accessories. "Some of them are beautiful confections that I’d just wear for special occasions, but a lot I can wear daily," says Leah. "The feathered pieces have natural tones, so I don’t necessarily have to pair it with a specific outfit. It’s just a complementary accessory for your hair."
