Philanthropy and its positive ripple effects are big concepts for a small child to grasp, but MarkMakers helps teach children about giving back and provides an engaging way for them to, well, make their mark. Eric and Diane Garfinkel, founders of Back to Basics Toys now owned by Scholastic Books, came up with this straightforward formula: You purchase a gift card, and your kids use the credit to shop at MarkMakers’ online boutique for gifts for people or animals in need. They can shop for specific items (books, blankets, school supplies or musical instruments), or allocate their money toward specified causes within six categories on the interactive, easy-to-navigate Website: environmental protection; peace and justice; kids in need; disease prevention and healthcare; poverty and hunger; and animal protection. Projects funded include cleaning up beaches, providing shelter for homeless animals, financing travel for children who need medical care, and promoting peace through cultural exchange programs. Not only will your children have fun learning about global issues and sharing with others, but they’ll also learn to respect the value of money and, most important, the value of giving.
