Subtitle: Intimate dining rooms, see-and-be-seen alfresco patios, roadside shacks & more

New York’s renowned summertime riviera can be by turns low-key or high-octane, and the same goes for its culinary offerings, from intimate dining rooms to see-and-be-seen alfresco patios to roadside shacks. No matter your preference, you’ll be sure to eat well here thanks the region’s abundance of fresh seafood and locally grown produce. Here are some favorites recommended by local insiders Jaime Jimenez and Michael Breault—many experienced by myself over the years. There are truly endless great places for breakfast and dinner particularly—here are just a handful … before you discover your own faves!

The 1770 House

Address:

143 Main Street

East Hampton, NY 11937

United States

Neighborhood: East Hampton

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 631 324 1770

Web Site: www.1770house.com

E-mail: innkeeper@1770house.com

Geography:
Description:
An intimate eatery housed in a charming 18th-century country inn right on East Hampton’s Main Street, 1770 House is one of the top local dining spots. The elegant main dining room has beamed ceilings, cream curtains and walls, polished wooden floors, wooden tables and high-backed wicker chairs with floral print cushions; on nice evenings definitely opt for the pretty and well lit outdoor garden patio. Menu highlights include tempura soft shell crab with green papaya salad, and roasted Berkshire pork loin with polenta. For something more casual and dimly lit, (and my personal preference) head down to the snug tavern in the basement, serving hearty gastro-pub fare. Wherever you end up sitting, though, you’ll find the food toothsome and gorgeously presented.

Red/Bar Brasserie

Address:

210 Hampton Road

Southampton, NY 11968

United States

Neighborhood: Southampton

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 631 283 0704

Web Site: www.redbarbrasserie.com

Geography:
Description:
This Southampton favorite is always packed and buzzing. Candlelit and cozy, trendy and classic.  When you go for dinner make sure you order at least one of their outstanding martinis. Their cocktail: ‘crisp pear cosmos’ is divine … The kitchen confidently cranks out contemporary American cuisine—dishes like succulent roast Long Island duckling with wild rice, toasted almonds and blackberry sauce—and the high standards apply to the food and service alike. A parade of impeccably dressed weekend revelers populate the stylish interior. It’s a spirited place ideal for celebrating special occasions with friends—you’ll feel like you’re at an exclusive Hamptons house party. Also great for an intimate date!

The Beacon

Address:

8 West Water Street

Sag Harbor, NY 11963

United States

Neighborhood: Sag Harbor

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 631 725 7088

Web Site: www.beaconsagharbor.com

E-mail: info@beaconsagharbor.com

Geography:
Description:
If a movie director had to film a Sag Harbor Cove sunset, undoubtedly it would be here. Parties of up to four people can dine on the second floor veranda. Everything from the decor to the service to the cuisine is relaxed and understated. The palate pleasing menu features summery cuisine with an Asian twist. My tuna was too large a portion, but so delicious I had a hard time leaving any!  Try the Beacon-style steamed mussels, guava baby back ribs with grilled asparagus and potato hash, or sautéed local flounder with Yukon mashed potatoes. No reservations taken during the summer months.

Nick & Toni’s

Address:

136 North Main Street

East Hampton, NY 11937

United States

Neighborhood: East Hampton

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 631 324 3550

Web Site: www.nickandtonis.com

E-mail: info@nickandtonis.com

Geography:
Description:
NB: Nick & Tonis was for years the chic, see and be seen evening out.  Not only do I think their food is now mediocre, the ambience is nothing special.  Don’t believe the hype.

Sant Ambroeus

Address:

30 Main Street

Southampton, NY 11968

United States

Neighborhood: Southampton

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 631 283 1233

Web Site: www.santambroeus.com

Geography:
Description:
Very Italian—Milanese, to be exact—this adorable spot is modeled after a coffee shop of the same name that flourished in Milan in the 1930s. Stop here for a cappuccino to take with you to the beach, or get it to stay and linger for hours. There are delectable homemade sorbets, and after a day in the sun you can start the evening with a panini and a glass of wine at the bar. It’s also nice for dinner, there are tables out back and a full menu. The food is seriously pricey, but delicious. Don’t miss the risotto alla milanese with osso buco or the gelato for a stroll in town!

Dave’s Grill

Address:

468 West Lake Drive

Montauk Harbour, NY 11954

United States

Neighborhood: Montauk

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 631 668 9190

Web Site: www.davesgrill.com

E-mail: eat@davesgrill.com

Geography:
Description:

Locals have been packing into this homey waterfront bistro for years for the lovingly-prepared pastas, seafood and steak. Fish is selected right off the boat daily! There’s a cute candlelit room and a cozy adjoining bar with outdoor seating on a deck next to the harbor. For husband and wife team Dave and Julie, looking after their guests is almost like a reflex. It’s a Montauk must, but take note that this seasonal treat is only opened in the evenings from May through October. It’s invariably packed to the hilt and reservations are taken only on the day you plan to dine.

Babette’s

Address:

66 Newton Lane

East Hampton, NY 11937-2440

United States

Neighborhood:

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 631 329 5377

Web Site: www.babetteseasthampton.com

Geography:
Description:
This casual cafe is the place to go for a low-key brunch in East Hampton. Flip-flops, shorts and a stylish T-shirt is the standard attire, and kids are welcome. I recently had an early dinner here and was impressed—only having had a hard time choosing what to eat from their amazing and healthy menu. On weekends you’ll most likely have to wait for a table, but if the list looks really long you can pop into some of the nearby boutiques on the shopping street of Newtown Lane where there are too many greats to name. Babette’s menu emphasizes innovative health food and vegetarian dishes, some with an Asian twist. For best views of the summertime street life, request a table on the small outdoor patio. Fresh juices galore.

The Palm at the Huntting Inn

Address:

94 Main Street

East Hampton, NY 11937

United States

Neighborhood:

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 631 324 0411

Web Site: www.thepalm.com

E-mail: customercare@thepalm.com

Geography:
Description:
Although the Hampton Jitney motor coach bus stops just out front, you’ll probably use the complimentary valet parking at The Palm, the East Hampton outpost of New York’s historic steakhouse, located in a white clapboard inn more than 300-years old. The restaurant has been a Hampton’s hot spot since opening in 1980, and like other Palm’s around the country, it has a good wine list and serves diet-busting plates of steak, seafood and Italian-American specialties. This is a great place for dining with groups of friends, but be sure to book well in advance. Expect glances from other patrons as you enter the large dining room; they are hoping you might be one of the many boldfaced names often spotted there.

Savanna’s

Address:

268 Elm Street

Southampton, NY 11968

United States

Neighborhood:

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 631 283 0202

Web Site: www.savannassouthampton.com

E-mail: info@savannassouthampton.com

Geography:
Description:
Don’t just show up at this perennial Southampton favorite expecting to even just stand at the bar … the restaurant is often closed for star-studded private events hosted by glossy magazines, and for after-parties following exclusive film screenings. But on normal nights it’s a lovely spot for casual fine dining, especially if you can score a table underneath the open-air pavilion on the garden patio out back, which is also great for brunch and for bridal or baby showers. Fresh bread (and occasionally pizzas), are baked in the wood burning oven, and the Italian-inspired menu offers steaks, homemade pasta and an array of seafood dishes, including sautéed Mediterranean dorade with asparagus, spinach, tear drop tomatoes, thyme and chardonnay.  Maitre’d Fabrizio Riillo is a true character who will remember you after a few visits.

The Restaurant at The Surf Lodge

Geography:
Description:
The laid-back surfer, while chic-at-the-same-time vibe of The Surf Lodge is carried  right over to The Restaurant.  Here the menu is all about what you smell and see as you take in Montauk—just picked produce from local purveyors and seafood fresh from the sea, no fuss, yet beautifully presented. Yum cocktails too … the Cucumber Breeze is just like it sounds.

Gulf Coast Kitchen

Address:

32 Star Island Road

Montauk, NY 11954

United States

Neighborhood:

Contact Information:

Web Site: www.montaukyachtclub.com

Geography:
Description:
Just fresh off a million dollar makeover, the Montauk Yacht Club now boasts a new restaurant, Gulf Coast Kitchen.  There’s a cozy living room feel, with the prerequisite navy and whites—it is a yacht club—that set the scene for the menu featuring dishes that are Cuban-meets-Mexican-meets-the-Bayou. Sticky Chicken with candied sweet potatoes and collard greens and Striped Bass Tikin-Xic, glazed in achiote and sour orange—see what I mean about the combos?

Clam Bar at Napeague

Address:

2025 Montauk Hwy

Amagansett, NY 11930

Geography:
Description:
Come salty and sandy, fresh from the beach for the best dining experience at the Clam Bar.  Delight in clams, clams, clams (if you’re not a fan, there’s shrimp, lobster, mussels, scallops, plus daily fish specials too), while you let that post-beach aura linger a bit longer.

The Meeting House

Amagansett, NY 11930

Neighborhood:

Contact Information:

Web Site: meetinghouseamagansett.com

Geography:
Description:
Just like its name, The Meeting House is great for gathering with a group—definitely bring the kids along to this spot too, for their children’s menu.  The pub/bar-style food isn’t exactly center stage, you’ll focus more on your cocktails and checking out who’s meeting who, a solid scene for a sleepy town.

Della Femina

Address:

99 North Main Street

East Hampton, NY 11937

United States

Neighborhood:

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 631 329 6666

Web Site: www.dellafemina.com

Geography:
Description:
One of the best, and most sought after restaurants in East Hampton, says my Insider Michael Breault, it’s owned by Jerry Della Feminia, the legendary Advertising Executive.  The menu is decidedly American, with corresponding Hamptons pricing, but definitely worth making a reso to get in there and sample the dishes as well as the scene—Della Femina is frequented by most NYC celebrities that holiday in the Hamptons.

Matto Restaurant

Address:

104 North Main Street

East Hampton, NY 11937

United States

Neighborhood:

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 631 329 0200

A white on white hotspot run by young Italians, sums up Matto Restaurant.  The filet mignon carpaccio with truffled focaccia is dreamy.  Great cocktails match the buzzy scene.

This spot is just recently opened, so they are still ironing out some kinks … But keep it on your list, Copa is great for sharing around a big group table. Good bar scene too with impressive wines by the glass.
