| Description:
One of our trusted insiders who recently moved to the Berkshires, told us she was immediately taken by this northern Italian restaurant, where the ravioli is handmade and the basil that tops off most of the dishes when it’s in season will make you think you’ve been transported to Liguria. Chalk it up to legacy. Photographs of the owner’s Italian ancestors adorn the walls here, and we can only guess the garlic-heavy dishes come from secret family recipes that have stood the test of time.

| Description:
It’s easy to imagine that Edith Wharton, who is to the Berkshires what Elvis is to Memphis, would have felt right at home in the Main Dining Room at the Red Lion Inn. In fact, it was a favorite of hers. Luxuriant red velvet curtains kept in place with tiebacks and adorned with thick tassels, tall pewter candlestick holders, Victorian parlor-style wallpaper and simply constructed maple wood chairs are just a few of the touches that evoke the building’s early days as a stagecoach tavern in the late eighteenth century. In the kitchen, the chefs deftly blend New England tradition with new world techniques and put a premium on locally grown produce. Oenophiles, take note: the nationally recognized wine list is 200-bottles long. The knowledgeable sommeliers will help you find a perfect pairing for any of the dishes, each of which captures New England’s bounty with style and classy flare. In a more casual mood? The Dining Room’s chef, Brian J. Alberg, also oversees the kitchen at the hotel’s Widow Bingham’s Tavern, where comfort food like burgers, lamb stew and baked fish are prepared with the same attention to detail.

| Description:
With its many museums scattered amid the picturesque hilly landscape and the always popular Williamstown Theatre Festival in summer, the Berkshires are a cultural destination year-round. No matter what artistic medium you prefer or when you’re visiting, you can always find a creative, well-composed meal at Mezze, which many people dine at on their way to the Clark Art Institute, Mass MoCA or the Williams College Museum of Art. Our Berkshires insider reports that beyond the great food, enticing wine list and rustic-countryside-meets-urban-sleek decor, she loves this spot because it manages to maintain a small town feel. The congenial staff knows the many regulars by name, but despite how clubby it may seem, it’s easy to feel like an insider by the time your first course arrives.

| Description:
Believe or not, you can find authentic, fresh sushi in landlocked Great Barrington. Named for the Bizen style ceramics of Japan, this popular and busy restaurant is owned by Michael Marcus, who studied the art of ceramics in Japan, and puts his creations to use as dishware at Bizen. He reportedly gets his fish from the same supplier as Nobu—not to mention organic veggies from local farms—but the menu goes beyond sushi, offering hearty nabe stews (the preferred food of Sumo players), traditional tea ceremony service and elaborate kaiseki meals—Japan’s haute-cuisine. There is a casual main dining room, but for a proper kaiseki experience, you’ll need to remove your shoes and sit on the tatami mats of Bizen’s traditional tearoom with sliding shoji doors. After several courses and glasses of sake served by waitresses in kimonos, you’ll forget you’re in New England!

| Description:
This new arrival lends some European flavor to the region—namely, Spanish. Viva serves tapas, paella and other traditional Iberian cuisine in a relaxed dining room and the adjacent, more rustic tavern, both adorned with bull fighting memorabilia and Picasso prints. Prior to opening this spot in late 2007, owner and chef Luis Zambrono worked at several other top Berkshire kitchens, including the Old Inn on the Green and Wheatleigh; in addition to importing delicacies from Spain, he uses lots of locally farmed produce. Be sure to try their sangria! |
