The owners of this adventurous dining spot also run the lovely boutique hotel called 1864 The Sea Captain’s House, and hospitality seems to be in their blood. Ambrosia’s dining room overlooks the sea’s volcanic caldera; it’d be tough to find a better fit for a romantic candlelit supper. Honeymooning couples are pretty much part of the scenery here—you almost suspect Aphrodite herself is lingering nearby. Perennial favorites on the menu are the guinea fowl in a sweet and sour sauce with tomatoes and herbs and feta filo pastry drizzled with honey.

In a tiny port just below Oia in the Bay of Ammoudi you’ll find this precious nook where, from April through October, the owners slave away over the charcoal grill cooking seafood they’ve caught themselves from the Aegean Sea. Try the sea bass and snapper. And we like the homespun everyone-in-on-the-action element of dining here: you select the fish yourself (and pay for it by the kilo). This place appears to have been created for long, lazy lunches.

After more than 30 years of being left abandoned, in the 1980s this former sea captain’s mansion was restored to its 19th century splendor by architect Ioannis Zaggelidis. Today it houses an imperially beautiful restaurant that evokes all the grace of its history. Expect Greek classics with a twist—eggplant mousse with vegetables and goat cheese; rack of lamb with olive oil, apples; and tea sauce grilled prawns with star anise.

Like most places in the gorgeously jagged island landscape, this restaurant offers gorgeous views, but just as stunning—if not more so—are the familiar Greek dishes prepared with a few thoughtful additions. The potato salad is prepared with island-grown capers; mushrooms are grilled with garlic, balsamic vinegar and olive oil; and pork tenderloin is sautéed with ginger, raisins and red wine.

Make like a Santorinian and head to the locals’ favorite beach—Perivolos. The place to have lunch there is Ta Dichita, a super casual seafood restaurant that resembles a brick and stone interpretation of classic Doric architecture. Its expansive covered patio faces the beach and is pure Santorini in style, with blue chairs and blue and white table cloths. The menu is tasty and varied; go for the fava spread, fried tomato balls and fresh fish. I recommend calling a taxi to pick you up for the 30-minute scenic ride back to Oia.

A dear friend of mine recommended this as his favorite Santorini spot for simple charcoal-grilled fish. The views are pristine and, just like at Katina, you choose your own fish and you’re charged accordingly. Pick carefully, or you could end up spending €200.
