Baleen

Address:

Four Grove Isle Drive

Miami, FL 33133

United States

Neighborhood: Coconut Grove

Contact Information:

Web Site: www.groveisle.com

E-mail: dining@groveisle.com

Geography:
Description:
If you’re looking for something romantic, Baleen at the Grove Isle Hotel and Spa in Coconut Grove, offers a lovely setting with waterfront dining and stunning views of Biscayne Bay. While the main restaurant is delightful, book the Dining on the Rocks experience where you dine out on wooden platforms perched on rocks overlooking the Miami shoreline. The menus are Euro-Asian (think ginger-lemongrass seafood and dumpling soup followed by herbed sea bass), the service is quietly attentive, and you can slice the air of romance with a knife. Portions are on the small side for the price, and the wine list could be better explained, but Baleen is a delight.

Geography:
Description:
It takes a gutsy personality to open an upscale restaurant in Miami’s gritty Upper East Side, but Michelle Bernstein is no ordinary chef. A 2007 James Beard Foundation Award nominee for Best Chef: South, Bernstein has turned Michy’s, on up-and-coming Biscayne Boulevard, into one of Miami’s best bistros. An eclectic mix of Spanish tapas and New American-French dishes, it’s a quirky, casual and contemporary dining experience. The blue and orange décor won’t be to everyone’s taste, but Bernstein’s "luxury comfort food" (think ceviche, crispy fried poussin, and braised short ribs) are right on the mark.

Tapas y Tintos

Address:

448 Espanola Way

Miami Beach, FL 33139

United States

Neighborhood:

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 305 538 8272

Web Site: www.tapasytintos.com

Geography:
Description:
It’s a big claim to say this is the best tapas In Miami, but this great neighborhood joint on Espanola Way at Miami Beach comes close to the mark. Specializing in terrific tapas plates that are matched by a very good selection of Spanish wine, Tapas y Tintos makes for a fun night out. The tapas runs the spectrum from seafood to meats, vegetables, cheese and Spanish omelette—you can order the plates individually or in mixed-grill platters—washed down with jugs of sangria or a decent bottle of Spanish wine. It’s loud, with music, singing and dancing, but ideal for a super-casual dinner.

Big Fish

Address:

55 SW Miami Avenue Road

Miami, FL 33130

United States

Neighborhood:

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 305 373 1770

Web Site: www.thebigfishmiami.com

E-mail: info@thebigfishmiami.com

Geography:
Description:
It’s not much more than a seafood shack on the banks of the Miami River, but this is a big little fish in Miami’s ocean of great restaurants. Don’t be put off by the industrial wasteland setting, because once you are seated at your riverside table, the dramatic Miami skyline is laid out before you. The menu consists largely of Italian seafood specialties, with the pasta made fresh each day in the Big Fish kitchen. The linguini neri (squid ink linguini with scallops, and asparagus and saffron sauce) is delicious. It draws a young crowd for Friday night Happy Hour and the service can be erratic.

DeVito’s South Beach

United States

Neighborhood:

Contact Information:

Web Site: www.devitosouthbeach.com

E-mail: info@devitosouthbeach.com

Geography:
Description:
I haven’t eaten here but my trusty Miami insider–PR whiz Kara Rosner—gives it the thumbs-up. Located on Ocean Drive on South Beach, it’s part-owned by actor Danny DeVito and is a fusion of Italian chop house, 1940s Hollywood, and the glitz and glamour of Miami. It’s very Italian—tables and bars topped with Carrara marble; red, white and green color scheme (scarlet bar stools, pearl-white chairs, avocado green exterior); and seasonal menus from meatballs to mushroom gnocchi. The signature dish is premium Kobe steak from three different regions of the world, the US, Japan and Australia.

Joe’s Stone Crab

11 Washington Avenue

Miami, FL 33139

United States

Neighborhood:

Web Site: www.joesstonecrab.com

Geography:
Description:
Don’t even think about going to Miami and not eating here, or at least trying to. This Miami Beach institution, at the south end of Washington Avenue, doesn’t take reservations so you just have to pick the right time and line up like everyone else (the wait can take up to three hours). Once you’ve nabbed a coveted table, settle in for a feast of seafood from stone crabs and lobster to ginger salmon, jumbo lump crab cakes, and Alaskan king crab claws—there are lots of other choices if you’re not into seafood. Finish off with a slice of Joe’s famous key lime pie.

Barton G. The Restaurant

Address:

1427 West Avenue

Miami Beach, FL 33139

United States

Neighborhood:

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 305 672 8881

Web Site: www.bartong.com

Geography:
Description:
Located on residential West Avenue, away from the hustle of Ocean Drive, Barton G delivers an intriguing New American and Pan-Asian menu from the signature B (a 26-ounce prime steak with onions rings and garlic cheddar mash) to the melt-in-the-mouth sashimi snow cones, Pacific tuna and salmon, and the Caribbean-inspired snapper and mango. The dramatic presentations may be a little over the top for some tastes, but the food and service are undeniably good—an ideal venue for a special occasion dinner.

News Café

Address:

800 Ocean Drive

Miami Beach, FL 33139

United States

Neighborhood:

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 305 538 6397

Web Site: www.newscafe.com

E-mail: newscafe@gmail.com

Geography:
Description:
Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2008, News Café is still part of the Miami scene. Take a table inside or sit out on the sidewalk, and tuck into all-day menus from just-right eggs Florentine to sandwiches, Middle Eastern dishes, pastas, pizzas, burgers and paninis. The News Café bar also offers one of the best (and longest) Happy Hours in Miami from 4-7pm Monday to Thursday, and if you’re on your own, there’s a newsstand with an extensive collection of newspapers and magazines. The place is popular with tourists, and the service can be erratic and arrogant, but the food is reliable.

Prime One Twelve Restaurant

Address:

112 Ocean Drive

Miami Beach, FL 33139

United States

Neighborhood: South Beach

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 305 532 8112

Web Site: www.prime112.com

E-mail: info@prime112.com

Geography:
Description:
This restaurant is set right on the beach, in the historic Browns Hotel. My foodie friend Fernanda recently wrote me the following: “This is the place for a juicy taste of Miami. The restaurant is cool and chic with a fabulous crowd and great food. Perfect for meat lovers, but tops on fish as well. I loved the beefsteak tomato salad with onions and blue cheese and the Kobe beef mini burgers are delicious. If you can possibly…the desserts are to die for.” Prices are a little on the hefty side, but you’re unlikely to sample such mouth-watering steaks anywhere else in the area. Watch out though, the service has a bad reputation.

11th Street Diner

Address:

1065 Washington Avenue

Miami Beach, FL 33139

United States

Neighborhood: South Beach

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 305 534 6373

Geography:
Description:
This original art-deco diner in South Beach does fantastic cinnamon coffee, good cakes and a huge range of simple, all-American favorites. The atmosphere is lively, though its location on the flamboyant Washington Avenue means that some peculiar clientèle drop in during the early morning hours (come here for an early dinner). The décor could do with an update, too. Perfect for quick bites and small gatherings.

Tinta y Café

Address:

276 South West 8th Street

Miami, FL 33130

United States

Neighborhood: Little Havana

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 305 285 0101

Geography:
Description:
Who would have thought that food and politics could go together so well? The atmosphere here is rife with friendly banter, and once a month owner Neli Santamarina opens the café up to a tertulia, or political discussion—"politics is part of the digestion process," she says. She serves traditional Cuban sandwiches with a Miami makeover; La Noche Entera is a heartier ‘American’ version of the classic medianoche, and you have to try their range of fresh croquetas.

Enriqueta’s Sandwich Shop

Address:

186 North East 29th Street

Miami, FL 33137

United States

Neighborhood: Wynwood

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 305 573 4681

Geography:
Description:
There’s wonderful paella and an arty, downtown vibe at Enriqueta’s, one of the hippest art world hangouts. With views out over Miami River, it gets and gets pretty full around Art Basel Miami. The clientèle is mixed at this no-frills eatery. Artists and collectors gather here and deals are brokered at formica tables amid the din of Spanish chit-chat. Leave your diet at the door and try the chicken sandwich—chicken, cheese and potato chips pressed between slices of Cuban bread.

Puerto Sagua

Address:

700 Collins Avenue

Miami Beach, FL 33139

United States

Neighborhood: Miami Beach

Contact Information:

Phone: +1 305 673 1115

Geography:
Description:
This is Cuban cuisine here is decidedly homestyle. Late into the night you can nibble on simple goodies like rice, plantains and ropa vieja and finish them off with sweets like flan and milkshakes. Be sure to get an order of yucca con mojo, a potato-like veggie covered with garlic sauce. It’s nothing fancy, but in the wee small hours, you’re sure to find the impeccably dressed club-goers in the same seats the Cuban granddaddies occupy throughout the day.
