| Description:
It’s tough to beat a spacious terrace dotted with huge umbrellas that’s practically at the ocean’s edge like the one here. But there’s a high exclusivity quotient here, as you can only book a table at this this sublime restaurant if you’re staying at the newly renovated Malibu Beach Inn. Hollywood linchpin David Geffin recently spent $10 million to give this hotel on "Billionaires’ Beach" a once-over. Needless to say, guests are in for a treat of the laid-back but oh-so-stylish variety. Tables are available inside or outdoors and the cuisine is California coastal with an Asian accent. For guests, I recommend it most highly for breakfast followed by a walk on the beach. Lunch is very good, but there are other restaurants in Malibu that are better dinner options. Service is spotty and the prices are steep given the rather simple cuisine.

| Description:
I love the menu equally for brunch, lunch and dinner. From sun-up to sunset, the food here is top-notch American cuisine with a Mediterranean accent. Geoffrey’s is an American classic and perhaps best described as the Pacific coast’s answer to Elaine’s, Manhattan’s gilded age celebrity mecca. Geoffrey’s legacy is glittery, to be sure. In its previous incarnation as the Holiday House, it was stomping ground for Rat Pack crooners and divas of the silver screen, not to mention the place where a certain senator from Massachusetts began a tryst with Marilyn Monroe. The glamour remains fixed at this open-air restaurant designed so that every seat has a stunning view of the coastline. It’s an ideal spot for a romantic dinner by candlelight. The coal-flame fire pits, waterfalls and lush greenery add tropical flair. For a light bite, you can’t beat the tangy Caesar salad served in a crispy Parmesan cracker bowl. (Yes, it’s edible.) Alas, the service isn’t terribly accommodating, but it’s a great place to sit back and star gaze. An interesting range of celebrity guests have been known to cruise through here, but there’s also a heavy rotation of families and couples.

At John’s Garden, one of the many great eateries in the expansive Malibu Country Mart, I had the best turkey sandwich I’ve had outside of New York City’s world class delis. It was stacked high on toasted whole wheat bread with sprouts, tomato, lettuce and mayo. This basic but savory lunch treat is best enjoyed in one of two places: a bench in Central Park or a picnic table in Malibu; the latter is widely available at this charming retro beachy food shop. I’ve been coming here since my teens, and, thankfully, it hasn’t changed a bit. The Country Mart is a small maze of adorable nice boutiques and cafes, so leave time to wander.

| Description:
This is Italian countryside charm via the Pacific coast. True to its name, which is Italian for "between us," Tra di Noi is intimate and discreet. The pizzas and pasta dishes, however, are far from understated. It’s situated in the center of the bustling Malibu Country Mart, but nonetheless, there’s an umbrella-studded patio where the lush plants and traditional Italian music evokes an old world trattoria. Inside, the traditional Tuscan décor—muted buttery hues, paintings of luscious fruits—is simple and straightforward. Against such a backdrop, the glittery accessories of the celebs and well-heeled industry folks who frequent here comes into sharp relief.

Alison, one of our LA insiders, loves this gem, which few visitors ever hear about but most locals know and adore. Go for the margaritas, go for shrimp burritos and silken guacamole with a spicy kick, go for the patio and the gorgeous views of the hills, or go for the south-of-the-border home cooked sensibility, which is only to be expected from a place whose name is Spanish for "grandma." From traditional Mexican cuisine to California harvest-inspired plates, like bright citrus salads, everything here has one thing in common: plays well with margaritas.

Given its tucked away location at the back of the winding and wending Malibu Country Mart, it’s little surprise that celebrities are commonly found nibbling on the delicious fresh seafood bites at Nobu Matsuhisa’s café-style California outpost. (Before the Nobu empire took on a life of its own, Matsuhisa opened his flagship restaurant, Matshisa, in Beverly Hills.) The room is bright and spacious, a bit simpler than other Nobus in cities around the world (Las Vegas, Milan, New York, London) but the sushi has all of Nobu’s signature spices, much of which is influenced by the time he spent working in kitchens in South American. Try the yellowtail sashimi with jalapeno or the lobster shitake salad with spicy lemon dressing.

| Description:
Just a few miles up from the wide gorgeous sandy beaches sits paradise—well, Bob Morris’s Paradise Cove Beach Cafe, at least. Bob’s is quintessential California casual, so much so that at times it can veer on the side of tackiness, but this 1950s diner-cum-gargantuan beach shack is a Malibu classic, one that’s especially kid-friendly. The food is fine, but to make a trip here for the menu is like going to a baseball park for the beer. Bob’s, situated smack in the middle of a cove, is perfect for lolling about before or after a meal. While you are here, though, try the fried calamari served in a huge martini glass on top of fries. Everyone does. While you’re at it, continue to blow off the diet and request one of the generous portions of their chocolate cake. Weekday breakfasts or lunches are your best bets, as the crowd is rough around the edges on weekends.
