Bovey Castle
North Bovey, Devon
If you want a taste of the British country high life, it doesn’t get much grander then Bovey Castle hotel and sporting estate, full of gardens, golf courses and the great outdoors. Hunting, shooting, fishing, long walks over dramatic Dartmoor National Park and plenty of planned indoor group activities for a rainy day in with the kids. The bones of the castle are regal; the interior style is in the midst of being re-furbished to a more tasteful, less maroon carpeted look—will be greatly welcomed. The property is comprised of 63 rooms and suites as well as 23 cottages (£550 per night), where the three bedrooms, living area and kitchen are a good bet for families. The newly refurbished rooms have all the mod cons and style fitting for a modern day lord or lady; country house fabrics and Art Deco bathrooms alongside huge flat screen TVs and WiFi connection. Many ornate public rooms with roaring fireplaces to sit back with a good book. The hotel offers accommodation in room or in kennels for any four-legged friends who might want to join in. Love that! While you’re busy hawking, hunting, riding or wandering, the kids will love exploring with the Bovey Rangers (during school holiday periods or by appointment); scavenger hunts, fishing, climbing, horse riding, archery and air rifle shooting. The lap pool is stunning—but I was under-whelmed by the Elemis spa on site. The formal dining room (The Mulberry) is romantic and offers delicious seasonal cooking.
Room rates from £225.
