As we sat in the outdoor hot tub, sipping champagne with a log fire blazing behind us, I knew what a good idea it was to visit Calcot. Set in the heart of the Cotswolds, it’s easy to get to, but hard to leave. A mix of 14th-, 17th- and 19th-century buildings, it’s country cute rather than overly grand, perfect for a relaxing spa break. The 35 bedrooms and suites are situated in the main house and surrounding cottages; the style is East-meets West country, with crisp white linens and Asian inspired prints below beamed ceilings and distressed wooden floors. Each room is different—some smaller than others, so make sure to go for a large standard at least. Outside, there’s 220-acres of rolling Cotswold countryside—turn your back to the road outside the hotel, and head out into fields bordered by stone walls, beautiful gardens and plenty of bracing walks. When you get back, 17,000-foot of spa is waiting for you; gym, a full range of exercise classes, 52-foot pool, and rooms for all kinds of treatments. If they won’t come to dinner, hire a babysitter and take yourselves to the Conservatory; tasty seasonal food with a Mediterranean twist and huge windows overlooking the gardens. Alternatively, stay in the spirit of things with a visit to the Gumstool Inn, Calcot’s very own English pub—how quaint! 2 hours drive, or just over one hour by train from London (direct train Paddington to nearby Kemble, then a fifteen minute drive to Calcot).
