South End, Boston, Massachusetts, United States

You’d be forgiven for walking straight past this discreet little B&B, tucked away in a tall old brownstone in Boston’s stylish South End. There are just 3 rooms, but clever mirrors and big common rooms mean you won’t get claustrophobic. It’s like staying in a friend’s house with family photos and books filling the public spaces—there’s even a piano for talented guest to tinkle at. Rooms aren’t large, but are attractively decked out in warm browns, whites and dark wood, with original fireplaces, four-poster beds, TV, WiFi and iPod docks, as well as bathrooms full of Molton Brown goodies. Attention to detail is everywhere, whether it’s in the decorative touches (look out for the room numbers), the brownies left out for late guests, or the map directing you to host Stephen’s favorite local eateries. As a B&B, there are less services that you might find in the bigger hotels; no spa, restaurant or bar, but the honesty bar stocks wines and bubbly for you to enjoy in room, or in the hot tub on the roof deck. Bond with your fellow guests over an expanded Continental breakfast at the communal table before heading out to explore the city—the location is perfect for Newbury Street shopping.

Room rates from $155.
