Homestead Inn
Greenwich, Conneticut, USA
This neighborhood eighteenth-century manor house is surrounded by a manicured lawn, under an hour’s drive or direct train from Manhattan. Owned and managed by husband and wife team, Thomas and Theresa Henkelmann, since 1997, it has been lovingly designed by Theresa to combine American colonial and ecclectic styles with an emphasis on bold color and original artwork. There are 18 individually decorated rooms and suites, some in the main house and others just next door on the rolling property. Thomas, a long time award winning chef, heads up the restaurant—not letting down the local habituees of Greenwich and NYC who rave about his talents. I liked most the lobster casserole and enjoyed the terrace seating, preferring it to the indoor area of the restaurant. NB: This Inn is not a star on creature comforts, main points being many rooms have uneven & old flooring making it quite noisy from the feet of those staying above and rather difficult to adjust to the angle! Not much is offered apart from the room for which the $500+ rooms seem quite steep. I consider a main highlight of this property to be Theresa, who is omnipresent and lovely along with longtime bartender Astley, just the kind of guy one enjoys mulling over a cocktail while standing at his old-style cosy bar. Closed 2 weeks in March. Room rates from $250.
