Old meets new in this classic century-old landmark building, in the heart of Union Square, which has been turned by top designer Philippe Starck into a super-contemporary luxury hotel. The 363 guest rooms and suites are light and airy, decked in silks, leathers and velvets in cool and tranquil shades of ivory, grey and lavender, and have floor-to-ceiling mirrors on opposite walls that create a clever illusion of extra space. A good friend Henry often stays at the hotel, and says the Private Apartment is absolutely gorgeous, but reckons the Clift’s public rooms are its best features. The Redwood Room, with its digital art installations, and clubby Living Room attract a young cocktail crowd at night, while Asia de Cuba—Jeffrey Chodorow’s inspired Asian-Latin restaurant—is a culinary hotspot in a city with great restaurants.
