The Ahwahnee

There aren't many hotels that can claim a National Park as a backyard, but The Ahwahnee is different—and very special. Built in 1927 to attract well-heeled visitors to the wonders of Yosemite, the hotel was one of the most complex building endeavors of its day with thousands of tons of stone, steel and timber trucked across the rough mountain terrain. The result was (and still is) an architectural triumph—an upscale lodge that makes the most of its unique natural location with spectacular views to Yosemite Falls, Half Dome and Glacier Point. The 123 guest rooms, which include four parlors, two grand suites, and 24 private cottages set amid towering dogwoods and pines in the grounds, are a handsome blend of wood, rich fabrics and Native American accents. The standard rooms in the main lodge are on the small side, but can be combined with a parlor to make a suite. Our pick are the rustic but comfortable cottages, each with a stone patio perfect for sundowner cocktails. The lodge's Great Lounge and Dining Room are remarkable with vast stone fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and timber beams (Ahwahnee trivia: all the "wood" in the hotel's exterior facade is actually concrete poured into casts and given a redwood stain—a very effective fire precaution). There's no spa, but facilities include an outdoor heated pool, tennis courts and a host of activities, most of which focus on the incomparable park.
Room rates from $426.
