Restaurant File: Charleston, South Carolina (Summer 2007)

rstchrlstn.jpgFIG, Historic District
The acronym stands for “food is good” and it sure is at this casual-chic neighborhood bistro. Michael Lata’s creative menu is seasonally inspired; the pan-roasted pork chop with turnip gratin and warm shrimp and crispy pancetta salad are favorites. Don’t forget to order some locally grown vegetable sides.

Oak Steakhouse, French Quarter District
Housed in a gorgeous nineteenth century former bank, this three level steakhouse truly is a national treasure. Chef Brett McKee artfully combines classic dishes with Italian flavors. Specialties include the 36 oz. marinated ribeye steak, lobster macaroni and truffled English peas.

Carolina’s, nr Cooper River
A neighborhood favorite; feast on Low Country cuisine such as jumbo lump crab cakes and pork tenderloin. Vegetables come fresh from the family garden in Kensington. Three individual dining areas add character; for a romantic dinner nab a table in the Perdita’s Room or try the buzzy bar room for something more up beat.

McCrady’s, Historic District
Sophisticated and understated; the menu’s not bad either! Creative salads include crab, lobster, avocado, watermelon and citrus rind puree, whilst the stand-out main has to be their pan-roasted Moulard duck. Oenophiles will appreciate the award-winning wine-list. A first-rate experience from start to finish…

High Cotton, Historic District North
South Carolina cutie; the decor and menu are both inspired by the eclectic heritage of Charleston with delights like spiced Carolina trout with black eyed peas. Get in the mood with live jazz every night.
